[01:03:16]   but think about that like think about if I do this one wire then what's going to happen am I going to have to cross over myself and I'm going to be accidentally touching the previous

[01:03:31]   wire and try it different ways you might like it one way versus the other that's okay all right here we go so I've got flux on the solder joint itself oh these are not these looked like oh these are flat pads

[01:03:59]   I'm dumb I thought these were little pocketed pads that I could solder the wires straight down to okay hold on that's hysterical okay I am actually going to

[01:04:16]   go in that case right to left if I'm soldering these on flat pads I'm going to I'm going to go right to left here so I'm going to move these other two wires out of the way and

[01:04:31]   then I'm going to get this wire into actual position this time into the right position I've of course got my nerd goggles on because I want to be able to see what the hell I'm

[01:04:46]   doing all right so we've got the wire exactly where it needs to be now and only now is when we want to come in with the soldering iron don't use the tip of the soldering iron

[01:04:57]   to try to hold the wire to the pad because you're going to have to remove the tip of the soldering iron at some point so you got to have the wire perfectly in position and you got to be

[01:05:07]   able to hold the wire in that perfect position as the solder cools these are very fundamental things but they are like the first things that you ignore when you're in a hurry or

[01:05:23]   once you've done a bunch of soldering and you think like oh I'm good to go now I can kind of half ass this and I'll be fine don't don't don't don't follow the basics forever they are

[01:05:40]   the basics for a reason and they will always make your soldering better quality in the end and it does matter these things do fly if they fall out of the air and hit

[01:05:52]   somebody in the face it's going to be a problem so don't be that guy do it right get it good and have confidence in your builds you will fly better if you have

[01:06:10]   confidence in your builds when you go to the lake you'll put it out over the lake without even thinking about it you won't be like super nervous the whole time like jittering on the sticks because

[01:06:22]   the damn thing fell out of the air a week ago and you're wondering if it's going to happen happen again and you're going to lose the whole goddamn build take pride in your builds do this

[01:11:03]   right God damn right please work I just want to show you this one thing there normally what we do is we build a big shiny ball where the the solder goes up the the wire is in here

[01:11:31]   and then the solder goes up over it and it's convex I believe that is is the right word that is technically not what we want what we actually want is for it to be concave so it's like this

[01:11:45]   and then it goes up and over the wire that's what those two left solder joints are and that's why when when I show it with the camera and this round light it looks so weird when it's a big

[01:11:59]   ball it looks much more uniform through the camera and that's what looks like good but these two left joints are actually a Little Bit Stronger because they don't have too much solder on them

[01:12:11]   why too much solder makes joints slightly weaker I will never know but it does Kevin Jay thank you again for the Super Chat all right one motor down three to go what's next over here again moving

[01:12:41]   the work to me not [@$#%] moving my hands around to the work get get the work into a position where it's comfortable and it's not a giant pain in the ass we're going to do the same thing we're

[01:12:58]   going to go left to right so let's grab the leftmost wire here and flux first one two and three this is a syringe of flux paste I find that this works a lot better than the flux pen

[01:13:21]   because this is like kind of goopy it's like a paste and so when I put it I can put more of it on the joint the flux pen is liquid so you hit these three joints with the flux pen and that liquid flux

[01:13:34]   moves all around and you can't get as much of the flux to stay in one place in that scenario and because of the fact that we're crashing the [@$#%] out of these things and they don't last all

[01:13:46]   that long anyway it doesn't really help much to use less flux if you were building building something to go into orbit and it needed to go up there for 20 years then yes absolutely you would

[01:14:02]   not want to use too much flux because it would make a difference but we are not and so we shall not these wires are a little short for this aiio to be sitting up on the standoffs so I'm

[01:14:19]   actually going to pause this one is also it's not too short it's just kind of the right length I'm going to go back and do this rear this rear set of pads because

[01:14:32]   these rear wires are significantly longer and then I will push the AIO down and that'll make it just right for those front wires these wire lengths were cut for the Aon

[01:14:46]   AIO which has the pads in slightly different positions and so we're just going to adapt a little bit for this in the easy way we're going to do this intelligently all right so this is going

[01:15:02]   to be a little bit harder this is there's just mad [@$#%] in the way but we'll be totally fine so again we're going to Def flux first one two

[01:15:17]   three and the challenge here is going to be getting the getting the tweezers in there to hold the wires and still have space because I can't kind of come in from an angle because

[01:15:36]   there's all this junk in the way so I'm going to sort of come down from the top sort of and then the soldering iron is going to come in from the side so get this here grab this wire with the tip of the

[01:15:48]   tweezers get it properly into position I'm hanging the silicone off the side of the board but I'm also butting the silicone up against the side of the

[01:16:01]   board and now the same thing is going to happen here I don't have a ton of solder on these three joints so we're going to end up with solder joints that don't look as fancy

[01:16:14]   we're not going to have those big balls that actually doesn't have enough solder on it there is a fine line between not enough solder solder and the exact right amount because of that

[01:16:32]   it's actually usually a better idea to have a big shiny ball in my opinion because it's better to have too much solder then not enough a big shiny ball is better

[01:16:51]   than a joint with not enough solder where you've got like voids in the in the solder itself so in this scenario I'm actually going to add a little bit to each one of these pads because right

[01:17:06]   now there's just not quite enough so adding to that first pad adding to that second pad adding to the third pad by bringing the heat in I've burned off a bunch of that flux that's what the smoke is the

[01:17:27]   smoke is the flux evaporating but it's okay because like the with the flux paste basically when you hit the flux paste with heat it becomes a liquid and it flows around a little bit and so you're you're

[01:17:47]   good at that point there is a little bit of extra flux here that didn't burn off and so that's another reason I like the flux paste you put it on once and then you can solder onto that joint a

[01:18:00]   couple times after that without having to put it back on there and so we're going to get a really nice solder joint here even though I'm not reapplying flux so check that out look how good

[01:18:23]   that joint looks even though it's the second time I've hit's there was enough flux left you can actually see the flux on that fet right above the joint see that that's

[01:18:36]   the liquid flux it flows outwards a little bit and so then you've got little bit of extra there and it's great and it's just so so nice the flux paste is is the jam man get you

[01:18:51]   some flux paste if you don't have it's really nice it has noticeably improved the quality of my soldering over the last like probably about a year and a half since I started using it there is

[01:19:11]   flux in the core of the solder so every time that you add solder you are adding a little bit a little bit of flux but it's not that much and it and it evaporates pretty quick and flux

[01:19:28]   is just so so so helpful that I find again you'll get much better quality work by adding a little bit of extra as the very first thing that you do every single

[01:19:41]   time okay actual electrical engineers will be quick to talk about the the correct way and the proper way and all this [@$#%] look we are building things that are

[01:20:03]   different and so we are allowed to do things in a different way that's not like the the absolute perfect way for sending something into space that is

[01:20:19]   okay I you like when when I used to see my dad like early days of FPV when I used to see my dad I would like Hammer him on like look at my solder joints am I what am I doing right what

[01:20:30]   am I doing wrong at one point he was like look you've been doing this long enough and you're building something that's so specific that you've sort of become the expert

[01:20:46]   you're the one that's crashing these you're the one that's getting to see when these joints fail how they fail and so to some extent like even though I've been to NASA

[01:20:58]   soldering school like you're the pro with with this specif oh for [@$#%] sake you're the pro with this specific work it's been on the wrong camera for a while no I guess not Ju Just since I

[01:21:12]   did that first joint so it's fine and that was pretty cool that was pretty cool because my dad is a goddamn ninja he was an electrical technician for many many many many years he worked in

[01:21:32]   Princeton on the plasma Fusion reactor called the toac they sent him at one point literally they literally sent him as opposed to them figuratively sending him I guess they sent him to NASA

[01:21:49]   soldering School weeklong NASA soldering School how to so things that are going to go up into orbit and so he knows he knows what's what and it is awesome I wish I'd taken more advantage

[01:22:09]   of it like back when I was in college and maybe pursued something there but at the same time like if I had done that that I'm I would probably be completely burned down on it and never want to

[01:22:28]   do it again so maybe it's a good thing that that it went down this way but what's super cool is that for many of my formative years there was a there was this noise there was a soundtrack in my life with

[01:22:47]   this noise in it son of a [@$#%] Cannon that is the noise that the that the Weller soldering iron holder makes when you put this the the hacko probably makes a similar noise but this my my dad

[01:23:10]   had a Weller soldering iron and so they use the same coil style solder holder and so there's this like incredible Nostalgia for me with the with the welder with the

[01:23:24]   Weller iron okay now that the AI has been pushed down I can the these wires will easily reach so let's move the work around and get the wire perfectly into position here I'm actually going to move this out

[01:23:51]   of the way and right right cool all right so that's going to hang out there I actually want to twist these twist my hand around a little bit make sure you're grabbing these

[01:24:10]   wires with just the tip of the tweezers that actually does make a difference all right here we go there's a good one second one coming up okay these wires are doing this weird

[01:24:47]   thing where there's a there's a super sharp angle in the in the exposed bits so let's just flatten that out a little there all right good to go the first one you can usually do by

[01:25:05]   hand but man the the second and the third ones because of how close the wires tend to be to each other it really helps to get in there with tweezers you really want to make sure

[01:25:17]   that you have total control over that wire and something you'll see me do that I just did is sometimes it helps to get the wire into position with the tweezers and then hit's and hold the

[01:25:35]   wire with the tip of the soldering iron let go very gently with the tweezers and then kind of rotate so that it's absolutely in the perfect position and regrab it with the

[01:25:46]   tweezers admittedly that's kind of hard to do because like if you if you're not holding the wire perfectly with the tip of the soldering iron it'll slip and move and it can throw solder balls

[01:25:58]   around so that's I don't know more like Advanced I guess soldering but that is a thing that I've I've been doing more and more over the years that I don't

[01:26:13]   know I don't like to have to do that I don't like to have to let go with a wire in the middle of doing the work but sometimes I can just tell that I'll be able to get the wire into a better

[01:26:29]   position CU what I really want is if if this is the pad the pads are all square right if this is the pad I want that wire coming perfectly off the end of that pad and I

[01:26:43]   want the silicone buted up against the the PCB and so I want that wire like perfectly centered and then just kind of coming off the bottom and some sometimes the the positioning that

[01:26:56]   you have it in initially is not quite perfect and so you can just hold it this is the only scenario where holding the wire down with the the tip of the soldering iron is is like

[01:27:12]   acceptable so but again that's sort of more advanced stuff if if you're ready for that you'll you'll know it this this wire is not quite long enough or is it I think it

[01:27:33]   actually is let's see it's it'll it'll get there it's just barely just barely that'll be fine okay there's also sort of a pacing to soldering you don't want to rush it

[01:28:02]   you also don't want to sit on the pad too long the the solder will sort of tell you when it's ready you'll see it Go molten you'll see it start to flow a little bit that's one of the reasons

[01:28:16]   that the nerd goggles are so nice is that it really allows you to see what the what the solder is doing it'll allow you to see when it Li fies I see when it's flowing so make sure you

[01:28:28]   got nerd gr I'm telling you guys if if you're doing soldering even on like 5 in rigs I don't even care if you're doing soldering on FPV stuff without the nerd goggles you're just making your life so

[01:28:41]   much more difficult so much more difficult than it needs to be they are so good and nobody is watching you solderthe embarrassment of wearing these pales in comparison to the

[01:28:54]   embarrassment of showing up with janky ass soldered gear so suck it up buttercup and I'm telling you get you some nerd goggles or losing your gear like how it's like the worst thing ever to

[01:29:13]   be the guy that loses a rig at the field and if you lose a rig because your soldering sucks everybody's going to be like wow you're you're that guy thank God you didn't kill anyone this time

[01:29:25]   please don't kill anyone next time it's it's our responsibility to not kill people what I mean so do a good job take pride in your work do a good job you got this you can do it's not

[01:29:45]   easy but it's also not that difficult you got this all right this wire is again almost too short but it's going to be all right all right there's

[01:30:14]   one what other tips can I give you you don't have to clean the tip of your iron it's a little bit stressful on the tip of your iron when you clean it so don't clean it

[01:30:25]   constantly clean it when it needs to be cleaned like you'll hear me when I clean this like right now I don't necessarily need to clean it there's a little bit of after you hit a joint the

[01:30:37]   tip of the soldering iron picks up a little bit of solder and that solder that it picks up is really good for for transferring heat the the LI the the liquid solder will serve as a big old

[01:30:51]   contact patch which will trans for the heat quickly and make your life a lot easier so don't obsessively clean the tip of your soldering iron if you put it down onto some work and

[01:31:07]   it's not transferring heat possibly you need to clean it but don't go completely crazy cleaning it I'm going to move this work a little bit because it's hard for me to get

[01:31:20]   the tweezers in here to hold this wire properly so there we go and now the soldering iron is going to come in from a different angle but that's okay you got to kind of

[01:31:33]   balance sometimes especially when the [@$#%] is like half built right You got to balance being able to get in there with the tweezers versus being able to get in there with the the tip of the

[01:31:46]   soldering iron and now I need to clip this one a little bit shorter there we go when you clip these wires always look for the little bit that you clipped off if it disappears there's a

[01:32:05]   chance that it's on the board and that can get bad and expensive and fiery so always pay attention when you're clipping wires as to where the [@$#%] that you clipped just went it

[01:43:43]   to tighten it down to where you think it needs to be and then just push down and you'll see the rubber compress what you don't want is for there to be a gap between the Rubber and the nut when you push

[01:43:59]   down don't push down too hard but like this is about right this I kind of think that I want to make this a little bit tighter here but like at its resting state you want it to compress the rubber

[01:44:11]   just a little bit and then when you push it down you want it to be able to move you don't want it so tight that you can't see it move when you do this but what you and then you don't want it so

[01:44:21]   loose that when you do this there's a gap in between the nut and the rubber that's sort of the best way to get these just right and it does matter it absolutely matters whether or

[01:44:33]   not you get these nuts tightened down the right amount and so that is not what you want you see that that is no good this one is a little bit too loose so let's crank it

[01:44:46]   a little bit tighter and it's going to vary it depends on the thickness of The Grommet that you run but see how that's still making that Gap there still not quite
